What to Look for when Interviewing Real Estate Commercial Movers

Today’s economy is difficult to work with, but for some it’s the perfect time to make an investment. For many businesses, especially those able to get the right commercial loan, purchasing a piece of real estate and relocating to uptown Dallas is exactly the right move. So, what’s the catch? Most of us move into our leased spaces thinking we’ll stay for a while, and no one is prepared for the hassle of finding relocation movers to get the business property to the new office. Sure, you can search for yellow pages movers, but do you know how to tell the difference between them?

The process of choosing a real estate commercial mover is simpler than you think. It will take a little bit of time and research, but if you are armed with the right information and a list of questions you’ll have no problem finding an interstate mover you can work with.

Create a List of Real Estate Commercial Movers

The first step involves making a list of movers. Start by looking through the Dallas yellow pages and making a list of movers to call. Soliciting the advice of fellow business professionals, family, and friends is a smart move as well – many of them have moved and may be able to recommend reliable and professional commercial movers.

Once you’ve made a list, you’ll want to narrow it down to a few reasonable choices. Start by making a few short phone calls to get a feel for each of the interstate movers on your list. Ask about their rates, and listen for the professionalism in the responses you receive. You’ll know right away if a company seems shady or unprofessional – cross those off the list.

Once you’ve shortened your list you’ll want to start conducting thorough interviews. Here are a few things you’ll want to ask and look for during the process:

  • Do your discount movers offer binding or nonbinding rate quotes?

  • Did your commercial mover come out to your office to give you a formal quote, or did he insist that his phone rate would suffice? If he won’t visit your office first, strike him from the list.
  • Does the uptown Dallas mover have his own liability insurance? Did he insist that his insurance will cover your property? If so, question him. His insurance will cover damage that he causes, but may not cover for damage to your property if not caused by his negligence (an auto accident, etc). In that case, your own insurance would need to step in.

  • Will your interstate mover be responsible for moving specialty items such as copy machines, your shop equipment, or antique clocks? If not, will he hire a specialty mover or will you be responsible for doing that on your own.

  • Did the real estate commercial mover give you specific details on how the pickup and delivery process will work, including timeframes and any other essential details?

  • Did your discount movers offer to give you a copy of a booklet called “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move?” The law requires that all movers provide their clients with a copy of this booklet.

  • Did the interstate mover you are interviewing have a set policy to settle disputes? Having a set, written policy is not a sign of poor service – rather it is a sign that your mover is willing to work with you to keep you happy in the event there is a concern.

Once you’ve asked these questions, and any others you feel appropriate, you can make a final decision regarding which real estate commercial mover to use. Be sure to consider both the responses you’ve received and your gut instincts regarding all of the interstate movers. Your business will flourish in its new uptown Dallas home.
